Marc Crothall - CEO, Scottish Tourism Alliance

Marc-BiogAppointed as the first CEO of the STA Marc has been at its helm since its inception in 2012. He is responsible for the day to day operations and leadership of the organisation which is acknowledged as being the voice of Scotland’s Tourism Industry.

The STA has under its umbrella of membership circa 75% of the 21000 Tourism business that operate length and breadth of the country. The STA are the lead guardians and co-ordinators of Scotland’s national tourism Strategy Tourism Scotland 2020. The organisation also delivers and co-ordinates the annual Scottish Tourism week programme of events in March each year which in 2015 attracted in excess of 9000 delegates!

Prior to taking on what he describes as a very unique job and one of the best in Scotland he worked his way up the industry ladder from potato peeling in a hotel kitchen in Brighton to senior executive management. With now 35+ years working in the front line of the Hospitality, Event , Sport & Leisure industries for organisations very large and very small business he has been able to build strong relations with most operating in the sector as he understands what is like to be at the sharp end! Sport (especially rugby- he is a Glasgow Warriors fan) is his guilty pleasure and throughout his working career he has been able to combine the two. He has played his part in making some of the most iconic sports events memorable for many such as those attending Royal Ascot, The Rugby World Cup, Wimbledon, and The British Grand Prix.

On completing his education at Wellington College Berkshire he chose to travel but only first came to Scotland in 1990 where he was one of the opening team of Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and then went on to manage the catering operations at Glasgow’s SECC, Hamilton Park Racecourse and the Scottish Open Golf Championship between 1990-95. He then went south for a few years before returning to Scotland in 2004 for a second and what he says a final time first to Glencoe then to Glasgow.

Having now spent more of his life in Scotland than anywhere else in the world and a lover all things Scottish especially his Glaswegian wife, coupled with the fact all five of his children 25 years to twins of 8 years have been born in Scotland despite his accent he considers himself a well and truly adopted Scot!
